Betsey Johnson

By Kristen C. Hopkinson
A survivor and an advocate for both fighting and surviving breast cancer, a mother, and fashion designer Betsey Johnson is still working it and creating! In her early days she dressed celebrities from Twiggy to Edie Sedgwick. She was very much a part of the Andy Warhol scene with her friends including Lou Reed. She was once married to John Cale of the Velvet Underground and later divorced in1971. She now resides in New York with her daughter Lulu.
Betsey’s career has been nothing but “ups”. Her incursion into the fashion scene began with the “Betsey Bunki Nini” boutique in 1969. In the 1970’s she gained control over the fashion label “Alley Cat” which had been quite popular in the world of rock n’ roll musicians. In the late ‘70’s she began her own fashion line along with opening her very first retail store in Soho. Recently, in 2002 she was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame. She now has expanded her line to jeans, lingerie, shoes, and handbags. She has dressed many celebrities to the everyday woman to girlie girl teenagers. Celebutants from Courtney Love to Salma Hayek and many more have all been draped in her gorgeous threads. Her designs are still as colorful and unique as ever; she truly is a timeless talent.
Her spring 2006 collection includes white eyelet and full skirts with tulle. Betsey always insures a woman to femininity and playfulness all at the same time. Her fall 2006 collection includes, suits with miniskirts, cocktail dresses, and taffeta trench coats. Her trademarks floated up and down the runway, which included bloomers and hot pants. What is fashion week without our Betsey!
